Goal
Reduce social conflict and violence and improve social cohesion and peace building in Guatemala, with a specific focus on the Western Highlands.
Four categories of conflict
Youth, gender and family
Youth, Gender and Family Conflicts. They result from disagreements between young people, between couples, between parents and children, between siblings, between adults. These types of conflicts often escalate into domestic violence and gender-based violence.
Governance
Governance conflicts. These are triggered by the population’s dissatisfaction with the performance of municipal governments and public institutions, mainly due to unsatisfied demands related to public services.
Lands
Land conflicts. Arise from factors related to land ownership, possession, use and tenure.
Natural resources
Conflicts over Natural Resources. These are generated around access, control and use of natural resources and goods.
Objective 1
Establish and/or strengthen inclusive, locally-led participation, dialogue and mapping to identify, prioritize and develop action plans that address sources of conflict and increase resilience to social conflict and Covid-19 impacts on social cohesion.
Objective 2
Build alliances between communities, municipalities and other stakeholders to implement priority actions for social conflict mitigation and peace building.
Objective 3
Strengthen the capacity of the Government of Guatemala and non-governmental actors to participate in the management, response and resolution of local conflicts, including persistent demands and new instability linked to Covid-19.
